A county sheriff is accused of murdering a judge who was shot dead in his own office in Kentucky, according to local newspaper Mountain Eagle.

The murder of a judge in the city of Whiteburg was previously announced by state Governor Andy Beshear.

According to officials, Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stynes entered the judge's office on Thursday afternoon and asked the people gathered there to leave them alone. After a while, shots were heard from the office. The sheriff came out with his hands up and surrendered to the police.

As noted, the murdered judge Kevin Mullins received recognition for his efforts to treat drug addicts, instead of putting them in jail.

The motive of the crime remains unclear, the police continue to investigate.
