The US Embassy in Belarus demanded that Minsk release the so-called political prisoners. The corresponding appeal is contained in the video of the representative office on the anniversary of the elections and the beginning of the 2020 protests.
"On August 9, 2020, Belarusians took to the streets to protest against the falsification of the presidential elections. Four years later, more than 1,400 political prisoners remain behind bars. We call for their immediate release and support the Belarusian people and their democratic aspirations," the US Embassy said.
In addition, the diplomatic mission posted a video with footage of the 2020 protests, which it called "a vivid demonstration of solidarity and unity of the Belarusian people." According to the US Embassy, Belarusians "continue to support each other in working together to build a democratic future."
"Together with the help of the international community, which supports the will of the Belarusian people, Belarusians bravely fight and serve as an inspiration for the whole world," the embassy said.
Recall, on August 9, 2020, regular presidential elections were held in Belarus, which Alexander Lukashenko won. The United States and Western countries did not recognize the results of the vote and supported the opposition protests that broke out in the republic.
