Israeli officials have informed their American counterparts about the details of the assassination of the head of the Hamas movement, Ismail Haniyeh, in a fortified building belonging to the Revolutionary Guard, the Axios website reported.
Two sources confirmed to the website the accuracy of the information published on Thursday in The New York Times newspaper about a bomb planted in the house of Haniyeh. Both sources explained that Israeli intelligence knew in which building and in which room Haniyeh stayed during his visits to Tehran.
They indicated that a high-tech bomb powered by artificial intelligence was planted in the room and remotely detonated by Mossad agents who were on Iranian territory after receiving information that Haniyeh was already in the room.
One of the sources said that the Mossad's position is that the murder of Haniyeh will restore justice to the victims of the last terrorist attack on October 7 and remove an obstacle on the way to a hostage deal.
The anonymous informant claimed that Haniyeh took a tougher stance on the deal than the Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar, and made it difficult to reach an agreement.
"Haniyeh showed a pragmatic approach to the mediators, but he took a hard line inside Hamas," the source said.
Haniyeh died in Tehran on July 31. The attack was carried out on the residence of the head of the Hamas Politburo after his participation in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps indicated that the causes of the incident are being investigated. Iran also requested an emergency meeting THE UN Security Council.
Peseshkian promised that the assassins of the head of the Hamas Politburo would regret what they had done. On the same day it became known that Iranian leader Ali Khamenei ordered a strike on Israel. Sources in the Iranian government have indicated to the media that Iran may launch a combined drone and missile strike or a joint strike with allies — Yemen, Syria and Iraq.
