Member of the European Parliament Miroslav Mitrofanov (The Latvian Russian Union party) thanked the members of the Russian State Duma, who adopted a statement condemning the ban on Russian-language education in schools, mixnews.lv writes.
Earlier, the State Duma adopted a statement on the inadmissibility of the elimination of school education in the languages of national minorities in Latvia, in which it is proposed to introduce special economic measures against Latvia. It is proposed to send requests to the government of Russia, the UN, the parliamentary assemblies of the CSTO and the OSCE, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, as well as to the parliaments of the Council of Europe and the Seimas of Latvia.
"We are grateful to the members of the State Duma and in particular to our colleagues from the Committee on CIS Affairs and Relations with Compatriots for their solidarity with the Russians of Latvia. Regarding sanctions, I would like the intentions to be implemented in actions that are directed not against individual sectors of the Latvian economy or ruling politicians. Ordinary people will suffer from the sanctions in the economy, and personal sanctions against politicians always serve as additional advertising for re-election. Ideally, the retaliatory blow should be targeted on the sponsors of Latvia's ruling parties, so that next time they think about whether to support the racists in politics," Mitrofanov said.
To remind, on March 23, the Seimas of Latvia adopted in the final third reading amendments to the law “On education”, envisaging that all schools start educating their pupils in the state language only by the 2021-2022 school year. President Raimonds Vējonis signed the law on April 2.
