666 days of freedom: Kiev court arrests Hero of Ukraine Nadezhda Savchenko

Shevchenko district court in Kiev has arrested MP, Hero of Ukraine Nadezhda Savchenko for 59 days without no right for bail. The MP was taken into custody under an investigation of criminal case on preparing a terror attack at the government quarter of the Ukrainian capital. The hearing to apply a measure of restraint lasted for eight hours, EADaily’s correspondent reports.

Under the ruling, Savchenko was arrested in court.

The verdict can be appealed at the appellation court within five days. Savchenko’s defense intends to use this right, her lawyer Viktor Chevguz said after the hearing.

At the same time, the jury formally found unlawful the detention of Savchenko at the Supreme Rada by officers of the Ukrainian Security Service, but ruled that the prosecution demand to take her in custody justified.

In the court, Savchenko confirmed she discussed a violent upheaval with Ukrainian military, but insisted she took no actions to this end. In particular, she did not participate in supply of weapons to Ukraine from Donbass. Besides, the MP said she intended to go on hunger strike to protest the arrest which she finds unlawful.

Us Ukrainian reporters calculated, after returning to Ukraine from Russia, Nadezhda Savchenko spent 666 days at large.

As EADaily reported earlier, on March 22, the Ukrainian Supreme Rada approved charging Savchenko with a criminal offence, taking into custody and arresting her. She is charged with offences like actions aimed at violent upheaval, preparations for a crime, infringement on life of an official or a public figure, establishment of a terror organization, unlawful weapon handling and others.
