Azerbaijan’s Interior Ministry and Prosecutor General’s Office have made a joint statement concerning the armed incident that occurred in Nardaran (Baku) on Nov 26.

According to the sources, a criminal group, acting under the guise of a religious organization, was plotting provocations, public disorders and terrorist acts. 

The police found out that Bagirov Taleh Kamil oglu, Agayev Elman Seydemir oglu, Mikayilov Zulfugar Sadraddin oglu and Buniyatob Abulfaz Geydat oglu formed a Muslim Unity movement with a view to organize a coup and to create a religious Sharia-ruled state.

For this purpose, they recruited and armed a number of supporters from all over the country.

According to APA, they were regularly meeting in the Baku community of Nardaran in order to discuss their criminal plans. They were disseminating leaflets and were plotting a number of terrorist attacks against government officials.

On Nov 26, the Interior Ministry held a special operation to neutralize the group. The criminals resisted. They used guns and explosives. Four of them were killed, a few more were wounded. As many as fourteen criminals, including Taleh Bagirov, were detained. The police lost two men.

The law enforcers seized a big number of automatic firearms, grenades, knives.

The criminals are facing legal proceedings.

The police are looking for the other members of the group as well as for accomplices.

It is noteworthy that just a day before, on Nov 25, photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan reported detection of a criminal group plotting terrorist acts in Armenia. Later the country’s National Security Service said that the group was plotting a number of grave crimes in the parliament and against Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan.

According to EADaily, their goal might be to cause instability in Armenia before the Dec 6 referendum on constitutional changes.
