Russia does not support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad but wants to preserve Syria as a state, Spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Oct 14.
“They in the West claim that Assad is the key cause of growing terrorist activity in Syria and if he resigns, things will calm down as ISIL is fighting because of Assad. This logic meets the requirements of the terrorists. It is strange to hear the civilized world suggest meeting the requirements of the international terrorism,” Zakharova said.
She said that by boycotting the efforts of the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Syria Staffan de Mistura, the Istanbul-based National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces has proved its inability to act as the only legal representative of the Syrian nation.
