Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko has instructed Speaker of the Supreme Rada Volodymyr Groysman to convoke the Constitutional Commission to consider adopting a law on civilian firearms and ammunition.
Poroshenko did it in response to an online petition for free possession of arms.
He has also instructed the Constitutional Commission to involve the author of the petition in its debates.
According to EADaily, on July 2 the Supreme Rada adopted a law allowing civilians to send electronic petitions to the authorities. In order to be considered, a petition to the president should have at least 25,000 signatories.
The petition from the head of the Ukrainian Gun Owners Association George Uchaykin had over 36,000 signatories.
Poroshenko does not support the idea to allow civilians to own firearms and told journalists that the petitioners were not the whole society.
