The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine has adopted a national security strategy till 2020. The press service of the council reports that the strategy stipulates formation of a system that will guarantee protection of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity from all possible threats, first of all, armed aggression.

Among the key goals of the strategy is to develop the defense industry, to supply the army with modern weapons and to improve missile technologies.

During the meeting, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko insisted that the strategy should stipulate NATO membership.

The council has also approved a complex of measures to build fortifications in Donbass. The press service of the Council reports that the heads of the Donetsk and Zakarpattia regional administrations had been reprimanded for failing to build the fortifications in time.

According to Secretary of the Council Oleksandr Turchynov, among the key threats in the strategy is Russia’s aggressive policy. “NATO membership will guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Our key foreign political priority is to deepen our partnership with the US as a guarantor of international security,” Turchynov said.
