Syrian parliament pays tribute to memory of Armenian Genocide victims

On March 17, the People’s Council of Syria held a special meeting dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, the press office of the Armenian Foreign Ministry told EAD on March 18.

In his opening remarks, Mohammad Jihad al-Laham, Speaker of the People's Council of Syria, said that the coming days coincide with the centennial of the genocide committed against the friendly Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire. “We express our unconditional solidarity with friendly Armenian people and our Syrian Armenian compatriots, who suffered the heinous genocide committed by the Ottoman authorities 100 years ago,” he said.

He called on the international community “to join efforts against the murderers, executioners and terrorism threatening the Middle East in order to prevent further crimes against humanity, civilization and history.”

The speaker then asked the MPs to honor the memory of more than 1.5 million innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide with a moment of silence.

24 April 2015 marks the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey. The fact of the Armenian Genocide 1915 has been recognized by Bolivia, Chile, Sweden, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Venezuela, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Switzerland, Italy, Vatican, Greece, France, Belgium, Lebanon, Canada, Russia, Cyprus, Uruguay, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, 43 States of the USA, etc. Turkey has not recognized the Armenian Genocide so far.
