William Browder detained and released in Spain

Today, on May 30, Hermitage Capital founder William Browder was detained in Madrid by Spanish police under Russia’s request to the Interpol and then released.

Spanish police informed that the Interpol order was not valid, so Browder was freed, TASS reports.

Earlier today, Browder wrote in Twitter about his detention.

The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office repeatedly sent requests for arrest of the founder of the Hermitage Capital, however, it was left without response. The most recent report on a new request was announced in December 2017. The Tverskoy District Court of Moscow ruled that Browder was guilty of deliberate bankruptcy, tax evasion and sentenced him in absence for 9 years. The same sentence was passed against Browder’s business partner Ivan Cherkasov. In January, Browder’s lawyers appealed the verdict of the Tverskoy court.
