Landslide arrests of acting and former military men suspected in membership in “FETO terror organization” have continued in Turkey. Under data of morning of May 11, within a day the Turkish prosecutor’s office authorized arrests of about 300 officers, Hürriyet Daily News reports.
Police raids continue in several provinces simultaneously.
Earlier, Izmir Prosecutor’s Office issued warrants for detention of 96 people in the investigation of the coup attempt and activities of the FETO.
Most of the suspects are former officers of the armed forces, 91 of the 96 to be arrested in Izmir are officers of the Turkish Air Forces.
Apart from Izmir, the raids were held in 14 provinces. Five suspects were reportedly “FETO civil imams” who coordinated activities of the organizers of the coup with the officers participating in it.
To remind, after a failed coup attempt in July 2016, the emergency regime was imposed in Turkeyю Since then, about 50,000 people have been arrested, including military men, police officers, prosecution and court staff, journalists, human rights activists. More than 150,000 Turkish citizens were fired from civil service and private companies.
The Turkish authorities consider Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen as leader of the “FETO terror organization” and instigator of the coup attempt. Ankara is seeking extradition of Gulen from the USA.
