Demarcation works has been started on the border between Russia and Azerbaijan. Boundary signs have been installed on the 70-km section, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov has announced on May 10, APA reports.
The diplomat reminded that Russia and Azerbaijan have a joint action plan for demarcation.
“However, demarcation is a very time-consuming process. It won’t take 1-2 years. To make sure that the boundary signs meet the international standards, the works on the demarcation between Azerbaijan and Russia will take 3-4 more years,” Khalafov stressed.
The length of the Russian-Azerbaijani border is 327.6 km on surface and 22.4 km in the sea.
It is divided into three sections: mountain, piedmont (along the Samur River), and lowland (the Samur River estuary in the Caspian Depression). Since the beginning of 1990s, the problem of demarcation of the border has been acute, the issue of dividing the water resources of the Samur River in equal parts was discussed. There are several border checkpoints that provide car, railroad and pedestrian connections between the two countries.
On September 3, 2010, a treaty on the state border was signed between the two countries. It completed delimitation of the state borders between Russia and Azerbaijan. In accordance with the treaty, a joint demarcation commission was formed to settle the demarcation issue.
