Turkey will undertake a new military operation in northern Syria “to clear its border of terror organizations,” Turkish President, leader of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced at a campaign rally in Istanbul on May 6, Al Jazeera reports.
He reminded of previous operations in northern and north-western Syria and promised a new victorious anti-terror operation in the neighboring republic. He claimed that those operations helped destroying “the terror corridor” at Turkey’s southern borders and assured that Turkish troops are ready for new missions.
The AKP nominated Erdogan as its candidate for presidency.
As EADaily reported earlier, the presidential and parliamentary elections are to be held in Turkey on one day, June 24. Erdogan said that snap elections were needed because of the situation in neighboring Syria and Iraq.
