Peskov: Nuclear deal with Iran “the only substantive consensus”

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action must be unshakeable, Russian president’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov has announced today.

Otherwise, there will be no foundation to continue contacts, to continue the dialog, he told reporters.

According to him, the nuclear deal is “the only substantive consensus” that was reached by all interested parties as a result of intensive work.

On April 24, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called his American counterpart Donald Trump to abstain from withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, or Washington could face “serious consequences.” Rouhani made the statement on Tuesday during a televised address to the nation.

The Iranian government will provide “a firm response,” if the White House breaches its obligations under the nuclear deal, Rouhani warned.

On January 12, Trump agreed to prolong the suspension of US sanctions against Iran introduced because of its nuclear program and frozen after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action came into force. However, the US president gave only 120 days to the allies in Europe who participate in the nuclear deal to amend it, otherwise the USA is going to withdraw from it. The Trump ultimatum expires on May 12.

Sources at the US administration mentioned in January that decision to suspend the sanctions against Iran was taken by Trump for the last time, as he hoped to toughen the conditions of the nuclear deal.
