The Kremlin is watching events in Armenia

The Kremlin is watching the developments in Armenia, the spokesman of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov has told reporters today commenting on the protest actions in Yerevan against election of the former president Serzh Sargsyan to the prime minister’s post.

Peskov expressed hope that things will develop in accordance with the country’s legislation.

He reminded of a phone talk between the Russian president and the newly elected Armenian prime minister, during which Vladimir Putin congratulated Serzh Sargsyan on the election. “In the evening, it was quite late, he [Putin] called him [Sargsyan] and congratulated him on being elected as prime minister. Of course, they exchanged opinions,” he added.

To remind, on April 17, the protesters in Yerevan planned to block the Baghramyan Avenue to prevent the MPs from voting for Sargsyan. However, the police took unprecedented measures to let the parliamentarians in the parliament. The police closed the avenue, in all streets close to it police forces and water cannons were deployed. Opposition MP, the leader of #MyStep movement Nikol Pashinyan announced the start of a “Velvet Revolution” in the country and called the protesters to block governmental offices.
