Interior Minister of Slovakia Tomas Drucker has resigned and left the political field. Appointed a month ago, Drucker made a resignation statement talking to journalists in Bratislava on Monday, pnp.ru reports. It became clear from his words, that he fails to cope with duties of “crisis manager” and does not want to replace police Chief Tibor Gaspar. Drucker said he is taking political responsibility for not being able to calm the situation in the country.
Local mass media are rather skeptical about the minister’s excuses. Immediately after his appointment in the new government, journalists found compromising information about his wife related to purchase and sale of land lots. A few days ago, the minister reportedly bought a mansion in Florida at half price, which mass media called understatement of income. As a result, Drucker was hospitalized for a couple of days and then suddenly resigned.
To recall, Slovakia's ex-minister of interior resigned amid political crisis sparked by murders of investigative reporter Ján Kuciak and his fiancée in February 2018. The journalist’s last article was telling about Slovak politicians’ ties with mafia clans.
Public protests demanding open investigation and resignation of the government resulted in resignation of Secretary of Security Council Viliam Jasaň, Culture Minister Marek Maďarič, chief state adviser Mária Trošková, Prime Minister Robert Fico, Prime Minister's chief of staff Roman Šipoš. In addition, the Christian-Democratic Movement came out with a statement calling for snap parliamentary elections, as the optimal solution in the country where police clan is stronger than the state and minister steps down instead of police chief.
