Elected by the National Assembly (Parliament), Armenian President Armen Sargsyan today swore an oath to the people of the republic on assuming the presidency.
During a special session of the parliament, the new head of state took the oath by laying his right hand on the Gospel of the 7th century and the Constitution of Armenia.
The Armenian parliament elected Armen Sargsyan on March 2 as the fourth president of the republic by 90 votes in favor and 10 against.
After the constitutional reform approved in Armenia at the referendum in 2015, the country passes from the presidential to the parliamentary system of government. Together with the accession of Armen Sargsyan to the office of president on April 9, the authority of the head of the republic Serzh Sargsyan was terminated, and the country's government will resign. The current leader of the ruling Republican Party, Serzh Sargsyan, may become the new Prime Minister of Armenia, in whose hands the fullness of power will be concentrated.
