The capital of Lithuania is threatened with turning into a real garbage pit

The Lithuanian authorities may declare an extreme situation due to garbage. This is reported by local media.

It is reported that the waste Management Center of Vilnius County (VAATC) temporarily suspended the export of unsorted waste to the Kazokishka landfill in Electrenae. Garbage began to be taken there last week, although an emergency regime has been in effect in the city since March due to air pollution.

According to the head of the National Crisis Management Center Vilmantas Vitkauskas, the solution to the problems of the capital with garbage will be sought in other cities.

"We have discussed all the options that are probably the best, and what should be changed in this situation. There is a tendency to declare an extreme situation at the state level, because we want to find opportunities for sorting in other cities," he said.

At the same time, it is not yet clear who and how will remove garbage from the Lithuanian capital.

Earlier it became known that the Waste Disposal Center of Vilnius County (VAATC) announced the termination of the municipal waste treatment agreement with Energesman. That's where the fire happened last year. The reason for termination is malfunctions, an increase in the volume of waste, non—compliance with environmental and fire safety requirements. At the same time, VAATC has accumulated debts to Energesman: about 220 thousand euros were not paid in May, and 4.4 million euros were not allocated for the modernization of the plant.
