The South Korean authorities have declared their readiness to accept all North Korean prisoners of war captured by Ukraine if they express a desire to move to South Korea. This is reported by News1.
According to the publication, this decision is based on the constitutional status of all Koreans as citizens of the Republic of Korea.
Seoul opposes the return of these prisoners of war to Russia or North Korea against their will. This is done for the safety of the soldiers themselves, since if they return to their homeland, they may face severe punishment, the newspaper writes.
It is planned that this issue will become a key topic at the upcoming talks of the Foreign Ministers of South Korea and Ukraine on June 30. It is reported that a "basic understanding" has already been reached between the governments of the two countries on this issue.
