Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti has decreed to appoint MP Valeriu Strelet as Prime Minister. The Moldovan parliament is meeting tomorrow to elect the new Cabinet.
In the meantime, the Popular Movement Anti Mafia Party organized an action in front of the parliamentary building on July 29 so as to express its protest against the appointment of Strelet. “Either give us Maia Sandu as Prime Minister or go away!” the protesters said.
The deputy leader of the movement Daniela Bodrug believes that the ruling regime does not want to see Sandu as Prime Minister as she has shown that she is actually ready to fight corruption. “Such a person can hardly satisfy people who have come into power by means to fraud with the only aim to rob the country. In contrast, Strelet will do what the president will tell him to do,” Bodrug said.
In the meantime, Strelet is considering candidatures for the new Cabinet. Most of the candidates are known. The full list of the new ministers will be published on July 30.
Earlier, the Liberal-Democratic Party of Moldova withdrew the nomination of Maia Sandu because it was rejected by the party’s coalition partners. Instead, it nominated its vice chairman Valeriu Strelet.
